Equipment for cleaning fires Give us a call if you are experiencing fire or smoke damage!

  1. Never Leave Cooking Unattended: One of the leading causes of kitchen fires is leaving cooking unattended. Whether you're frying, boiling, or baking, stay in the kitchen and keep a close eye on your food. If you need to leave the kitchen, turn off the stove or oven.

  2. Keep Flammable Items Away: Store flammable items, such as dish towels, oven mitts, and paper towels, away from the stove and other heat sources. These materials can catch fire easily, so maintaining a clear and clutter-free cooking area is crucial.

  3. Regularly Clean Appliances: Grease and food residue can accumulate on kitchen appliances, increasing the risk of fires. Regularly clean your oven, stovetop, toaster, and other cooking appliances to prevent the buildup of flammable materials.

  4. Use Caution with Cooking Oil: Cooking oil poses a high fire risk. Never heat oil to the smoking point, and always use a deep fryer with caution. If a grease fire occurs, never use water to extinguish it. Instead, use a fire extinguisher or smother the flames with a metal lid.

  5. Install a Smoke Detector: Ensure your kitchen is equipped with a working smoke detector. Regularly test the detector to confirm it's functioning correctly, and replace the batteries as needed. A smoke detector can provide early warning in case of a fire.

  6. Invest in a Fire Extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location in your kitchen. Make sure you know how to use it, and check the expiration date regularly. A small fire extinguisher can make a big difference in containing a kitchen fire before it spreads.

  7. Check Electrical Appliances: Inspect your electrical appliances for frayed cords, damaged plugs, or any signs of wear. Replace or repair any damaged appliances immediately. Faulty electrical equipment can be a significant fire hazard.

  8. Practice Safe Cooking Habits: When cooking, use safe habits such as turning pot handles inward to prevent accidental spills, and use caution when working with hot surfaces. Teach children about kitchen safety, and keep them away from the stove and other cooking appliances.

  9. Create a Fire Escape Plan: In the event of a kitchen fire, having a well-thought-out escape plan is crucial. Ensure everyone in the household knows the plan and practice it regularly. Designate a meeting point outside the home.

  10. Know How to Handle Different Types of Fires: Different fires require different approaches for safe extinguishing. Familiarize yourself with the proper techniques for putting out fires involving grease, electrical equipment, and other kitchen elements. Understanding the appropriate response can prevent a small incident from escalating.

    • Use pipe insulation or heat tape to wrap pipes. This helps retain heat and prevent freezing.
  2. Seal Leaks:

    • Seal any gaps or cracks in walls, windows, and doors to prevent cold air from entering and reaching your pipes.
  3. Keep Interior Doors Open:

    • Allow warm air to circulate freely through your home by keeping interior doors open. This helps maintain a consistent temperature.

    • Allow faucets to drip slowly during extremely cold weather. This prevents pressure buildup in the pipes, reducing the risk of freezing.
  5. Maintain a Consistent Temperature:

    • Keep your home heated to a consistent temperature, especially at night. Even if you're away, don't let the temperature drop too low.
  6. Use Space Heaters:

  7. Open Cabinet Doors:

    • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach pipes. This is particularly important in kitchens and bathrooms.
  8. Disconnect Garden Hoses:

    • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses before winter. Close the inside valves that supply outdoor hose bibs and keep them open outside to let any remaining water drain out.
  9. Insulate Exterior Walls:

    • Insulate exterior walls to help maintain a warmer temperature within the home.
  10. Install a Smart Thermostat:

    • Use a smart thermostat to monitor and control the temperature remotely. Some smart thermostats can alert you if the temperature drops significantly.
  11. Drain the Water System if Away:

    • If you're going away during the winter, consider draining your water system to prevent pipes from freezing. Alternatively, set the thermostat to a minimum temperature.
  12. Apply Heat Tape:

    • Use heat tape on vulnerable pipes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
  13. Professional Inspection:

    • If you have concerns about the vulnerability of your plumbing system to freezing, consider consulting a professional plumber for an inspection and advice.

Remember that prevention is key, and taking these measures before the onset of winter can save you from the inconvenience and potential damage caused by frozen pipes.

Smoke Damage on Cabinets This Dallas home suffered smoke damage and this smell lasted after the fire. We provided services and cleaned in two days.

Removing smoke odor from a home can be a difficult task, but there are several steps you can take to help eliminate the smell. Here are some tips to help you remove smoke odor from your home:

  1. Open windows and doors: The first step in removing smoke odor is to ventilate your home. Open windows and doors to let fresh air in and smoke odor out.

  2. Clean all surfaces: Smoke particles can settle on surfaces throughout your home, so it's important to clean everything thoroughly. Use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to wipe down walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and other surfaces. You can also use a commercial smoke odor remover or a deodorizing spray.

  3. Replace air filters: Smoke can clog your home's air filters, so it's important to replace them as soon as possible. Consider using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which can capture even the smallest smoke particles.

  4. Wash clothing and fabrics: Smoke odor can cling to clothing and other fabrics. Wash all washable fabrics in hot water with detergent and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Dry clean any items that cannot be washed in a washing machine.

  5. Use an odor-absorbing product: There are many odor-absorbing products on the market that can help remove smoke odor from your home. Examples include activated charcoal, baking soda, and air purifiers with HEPA filters.

  6. Hire a professional: If the smoke odor is particularly strong or persistent, consider hiring a professional cleaning service that specializes in smoke odor removal. They may have access to specialized equipment and techniques that can help eliminate the smell.

It's important to note that smoke odor removal may take time and may require a combination of these methods. Be patient and persistent in your efforts, and eventually, your home should smell fresh and clean again.

Fire Damage To Home This home suffered fire damage and was a total loss

Smoke damage is a common occurrence in commercial property fires, and it can be extremely detrimental to the property and its occupants. Smoke damage can leave behind a residue that is difficult to clean and can cause health problems if not addressed properly. In this blog post, we will discuss the impact of smoke damage in commercial property, how it can be prevented, and how to properly address it.

The Impact of Smoke Damage in Commercial Property

Smoke damage can cause significant damage to the structure of a commercial property. Smoke can penetrate walls, ceilings, and floors, leaving behind a residue that can cause discoloration and odors. The longer the smoke residue remains, the more difficult it is to clean. Smoke damage can also impact the HVAC system, which can spread the residue throughout the property and affect the air quality.

Smoke damage can also be harmful to the health of the occupants. The smoke residue can contain harmful chemicals and carcinogens, which can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and other health issues. Additionally, smoke damage can impact the functionality of electrical equipment, leading to potential safety hazards.

Preventing Smoke Damage in Commercial Property

The best way to prevent smoke damage is to take preventative measures. The first step is to ensure that the property has working smoke detectors and fire suppression systems. Regular inspections and maintenance of these systems are also critical to ensuring they are functioning properly.

Another preventative measure is to establish and communicate a fire safety plan to employees and occupants of the property. This plan should include procedures for evacuating the building, contacting emergency services, and preventing fires from starting in the first place.

Properly Addressing Smoke Damage in Commercial Property

If smoke damage does occur, it is essential to address it promptly and properly. The first step is to contact a professional restoration company that specializes in smoke damage cleanup. These professionals have the expertise, equipment, and cleaning solutions necessary to remove smoke residue and prevent further damage.

It is important to note that attempting to clean smoke damage without professional assistance can be dangerous and potentially cause further damage. Additionally, it can be challenging to identify all of the areas impacted by smoke damage without proper training and equipment.

In conclusion, smoke damage in commercial property can be costly, hazardous, and difficult to address. Preventative measures such as having working smoke detectors and fire suppression systems, establishing a fire safety plan, and regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent smoke damage from occurring. If smoke damage does occur, it is crucial to contact a professional restoration company to properly address it. By taking these steps, you can help ensure the safety and well-being of the property and its occupants.

East Dallas Hallway This Local East Dallas Apartment Suffered Heavy Water Damage Loss

Water damage is a nightmare for any homeowner. Whether it's caused by a burst pipe, a leaking roof, or a natural disaster like a flood, water damage can cause serious problems for your home and your health. If you've experienced water damage, it's important to take action quickly to prevent further damage and restore your home to its preloss condition. In this blog, we'll discuss some tips and strategies for water damage repair that can help you get your home back on track.

Assess the Damage

The first step in water damage repair is to assess the damage. Take a careful look around your home and identify all areas that have been affected by water. Look for signs of water damage, such as water stains, mold growth, and dampness. If you're not sure where to start, consider hiring a professional water damage restoration company to perform an assessment.

Remove Standing Water

The next step is to remove any standing water from your home. If you have a significant amount of water in your home, you may need to use a pump to remove it. If the water damage is relatively minor, you may be able to use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up the water. Be sure to wear protective gear, such as gloves and boots, while doing this to avoid exposure to contaminated water.

Dry the Area

After you've removed the standing water, it's important to dry out the affected area as quickly as possible. Use fans and dehumidifiers to circulate air and remove moisture from the air. If you have access to natural sunlight, open windows and doors to allow fresh air in. This will help prevent mold growth and further damage to your home.

Clean and Disinfect

Once the affected area is dry, it's important to clean and disinfect it thoroughly. This will help prevent the growth of mold and bacteria, which can cause health problems for you and your family. Use a mixture of bleach and water to disinfect hard surfaces, such as floors and walls. Be sure to wear protective gear, such as gloves and a mask, while cleaning to avoid exposure to harmful chemicals.

Restore Your Home

Finally, it's time to restore your home to its preloss condition. This may involve replacing damaged materials, such as drywall and carpeting. Be sure to work with a reputable contractor who has experience in water damage restoration. They will be able to guide you through the restoration process and ensure that your home is safe and livable again.

Water damage can be a stressful and overwhelming experience for any homeowner. However, by taking action quickly and following these tips for water damage repair, you can restore your home and prevent further damage. Remember, the key is to act fast and work with a professional restoration company to ensure that your home is safe and healthy for you and your family.

Fire Safety in Balch Springs: Tips For Protecting Your Home and Family

2/20/2023 (Permalink)

Grass Fire in Balch Springs The Grass Fire this past year was tragic

Fires can happen at any time, and they can cause serious damage to your home and put your family at risk. As a homeowner in Dallas, it's important to take steps to protect your home and family from the devastating effects of a fire. In this blog, we'll discuss some fire safety tips that can help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Install Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms are essential for fire safety in any home. They can detect smoke and alert you to the presence of a fire before it gets out of control. Make sure you have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home and inside each bedroom. Test your smoke alarms regularly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

Create a Fire Escape Plan

Having a fire escape plan in place is critical for protecting your family in the event of a fire. Make sure everyone in your home knows the plan and knows how to escape quickly and safely. Practice your fire escape plan regularly so everyone is prepared in case of an emergency.

Keep Flammable Materials Away from Heat Sources

Many fires start because flammable materials, such as clothing or curtains, are placed too close to heat sources like candles or space heaters. Make sure to keep all flammable materials at least three feet away from heat sources. Never leave candles, space heaters, or other heat sources unattended.

Use Cooking Appliances Safely

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, so it's important to use your cooking appliances safely. Never leave food unattended on the stove, and always turn off the stove when you're finished cooking. Keep flammable materials away from the stove, and make sure your cooking area is clean and free of grease buildup.

Have Your Chimney Inspected and Cleaned

If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, it's important to have your chimney inspected and cleaned regularly. A buildup of creosote in the chimney can increase the risk of a chimney fire. Hire a professional chimney sweep to inspect and clean your chimney at least once a year.

Fire safety is an important concern for homeowners in Balch Springs. By following these tips, you can help protect your home and family from the devastating effects of a fire. Remember to install smoke alarms, create a fire escape plan, keep flammable materials away from heat sources, use cooking appliances safely, and have your chimney inspected and cleaned regularly. With these precautions in place, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you're doing everything you can to keep your home and family safe

Preventing Freeze Damage

2/1/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO trucks Stay warm during this freeze Dallas is experiencing.

Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)

Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.

If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

Balch Springs Handles Pipe Bursts

2/1/2023 (Permalink)

Pipe Bursting At SERVPRO we've seen many situations where the pipes were the cause of the problem.

Frozen pipes

If you have a frozen pipe:

  • put hot water bottles or a thick cloth soaked in hot water over the frozen pipe - when thawing, start at the end of the pipe nearest the tap and work away from it
  • don't use a naked flame
Burst pipes

If a pipe bursts:

  • turn off the main stopcock
  • open all the cold taps to drain the system if the flow of water cannot be stopped
  • if the burst is on a pipe from the storage tank, turn off the stop valve in the storage tank, turn on all hot taps to drain the system, allow the fire to burn out or turn the heating off until the burst pipe has been attended to by a plumber

Blach Springs Worst Fire To Date

12/1/2022 (Permalink)

Balch Springs House Fire This fire turned tragic after multiple houses were burnt to the ground.

What started as a grass fire in suburban Dallas turned into a devastating blaze, torching 10 to 20 acres and damaging more than two dozen homes, officials said.

The fire ripped through a neighborhood of Balch Springs Monday, after someone mowed an area of tall grass or brush, known as “brush hogging.”

“The fire started from someone brush hogging in the field behind the homes,” Balch Springs Fire Marshal Sean Davis told CNN on Monday. “He hit some debris in the field that caused a spark. The spark set the cut grass on fire.”

Nearby residents were evacuated in the suburb about 15 miles southeast of Dallas.

Davis said the blaze damaged 26 homes. Nine are a “total loss,” he said.

At least six fire departments helped extinguish the flames by Monday night, Davis said. No injuries were reported.

But the risk of a fast-moving blaze is not over.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of North Texas face “elevated fire danger” Tuesday, with temperatures expected to soar past 100 degrees.

During a fire, not all materials burn entirely. Even materials like wood, that appear to burn safely, can leave behind smoke and soot. Other materials used in the building and manufacturing process may leave behind dangerous chemicals. Some of this damage will be visible to the naked eye, but not all of it.

Smoke damage can cause or exacerbate health problems and decrease the value of your property. After any smoke damage event, it’s important to have your property professionally remediated.

Does Your Insurance Company Cover Water Damage?

8/17/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage on Floor SERVPRO of Balch Springs is here to help your next water damage emergency.

Water damage sets you back badly if you were not prepared for it. For this reason, you need to ensure that you are covered against such issues. While you can get water damage insurance, certain scenarios will not be covered by your insurance. To help you with this, here is everything you need to know about water damage insurance.

What is Water Damage Insurance?

Water damage is insurance money that is paid out when your house is affected by water damage. It helps deal with the pairs. While companies like SERVPRO of Balch Springs come in and help restore your home, insurance companies ensure there are enough funds for the home restoration.

Situations Where Water Damage Insurance Works

There are situations where insurance companies will pay for the damages caused to your home. Here are the situations when your insurance will pay for your water damage:

  • Accidental leaks- Insurance will take care of leaks from pipes and broken washers that cause water damage.
  • Burst pipes- Water damage from burst pipes due to frozen pipes and any other incident will be covered
  • Damage from fires- If the water was used to put out a fire and caused damage to your property, the damage will be insured.
  • Roof leaks- If there was water damage to the interior of your house because of a roof leak, that would be catered to by insurance. The only thing you need to ensure is the leak was not caused by a fallen tree or a caved-in roof that was not fixed.
  • Water damage from storms like heavy and sudden rain,
  • Ice dam- Insurance will cover ice dams built in your gutter in cold months. If these ice dams result from neglect, you will not get them fixed.

Situations When Water Damage Will Not be Covered by Insurance

There are also times when your insurance will not work for water damage. Knowing about these will help you be careful with the care you give your home and figure out when you can rely on insurance and when to deal with it independently. Here are the situations where insurance will not cover water damage:

  • Flood damage. Any damage caused by extreme flooding will not be covered
  • Water damage is caused by negligence or lack of maintenance. If your home gets water damaged because you did not fix leaks when they occurred or did not carry out regular checks, then this will not be covered
  • Damage for intentional acts. If you set your ho on fire or turn off the heat in winter, then you will not be compensated for whatever damage
  • Water damage from backup sewer lines. You need to get a proper cover for that
  • Cost of repairing source. No compensation will be given for a broken heater or washer

Commercial Storm Damage Repair Process

5/24/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Balch Springs Storm Damage Experts We have trained professionals to handle any size disaster.

Implement  A Storm Preparedness Plan For Your Business

Storms can wreak havoc on commercial buildings. By implementing some sound storm preparedness plans you can reduce the risk of severe damage to your property in Balch Springs.

1. Mitigate the Risks
Strong winds and heavy rain account for much of the damage during a storm. Before the storm hits, prepare your property to reduce the risk of extensive damage.

Bring in outdoor equipment, such as grills and lawn furniture to avoid items becoming airborne. Board up windows and glass doors so they don't shatter during the storm.
Inspect roofing materials to ensure they are secured. Fix any loose materials right away.
Trim any loose branches near the building so they don't damage the siding or break windows.
Disconnect computers and other electrical devices. Don't unplug the refrigerator, however.
Move loose items away from windows inside the building as much as possible.

2. Train Employees on Storm Procedures
Make sure all employees and visitors understand what to do in an emergency. Property management must develop work instructions to address the risks and then train workers on the procedures.
Conduct emergency drills with all employees so that they are familiar with the emergency procedures. This will reduce the risk of people becoming panicked during a true emergency.
Designate evacuation exits and assign persons who are responsible to account for employees and visitors.

3. Inspect the Property After the Storm Passes
Wait until you are sure that the storm has passed before inspecting the building. If the emergency required persons to evacuate, don't allow employees to enter the building until authorities have given permission to do so.
Authorized personnel should inspect the property around the building to look for damage. They can identify issues to the structural integrity of the building and look for potential hazards that must be addressed. Call a storm restoration service if you need help with repairs.
Implement a sound storm preparedness plan to reduce the risk of damage during a storm.

After a flood happens in Balch Springs homeowners may be faced with property losses and damage. Unlike a pipe leak, which is relatively clean water, the cleaning requirements for floodwaters are different. Along with potential black water in the mix, there can also be debris and loosened materials to watch for.

Assessing the Damage

Anything the flood waters touch will need to be addressed. If the flooding is overwhelming, a flood clean professional help you address the problem and provide services to get your home looking “Like it never even happened.” During an initial inspection, in addition to checking flooring and walls, check the following for any contact with the waters:

  • Clothing
  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Kitchen utensils, plates, cups, etc.
  • Appliances
  • Mattresses
  • Toys

While some of these may be able to be cleaned, such as appliances and furniture, some of them should be thrown away. Things like mattresses and stuffed animals can be difficult to completely clean. If a rug has been saturated more than 24 hours, it may need to be tossed. Any clothes, rugs and furniture should immediately be removed and set out to dry before cleaning.

A Thorough Clean

One of the main cleaning requirements for flood waters is a good flood disinfectant. It will not only eliminate bacteria, stains and odors but also help reduce the potential for mold to grow. Once any wet items have been dried, usually for at least 48 hours, the cleaning process can start. Be sure to clean anything that has been in contact with water and remember to take safety precautions during the process, such as:

  • Wear disposable gloves and clothing.
  • Avoid touching the face or eyes.
  • Refresh cleaning solution when it becomes cloudy.
  • Thoroughly wash hands after cleaning.

While cleaning requirements may feel overwhelming on top of all the other stresses from the flooding itself, it’s important to ensure everything is clean. That will ensure any mold or bacteria is stopped in its tracks before becoming an issue down the road.

What To Do When Flooding Happens

5/24/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damaged Couch In Home SERVPRO of Balch Springs Storm Flooding in Home.

When the flood water runs high in Balch Springs the most critical decisions you can make are what not to do. Avoid certain pitfalls and you can make it through the disaster with what's important.

Don't Stay Behind

You may feel tempted to sit tight and ride out the storm, but this is not in your best interest. Especially if your are receiving severe flood warnings, evacuate to a shelter or stay the night in a hotel. The well-being of you and your family are more important than your pride or property. Even if you did stay, there would be nothing you could do to prevent damage. You might end up in a situation where you need to be rescued from your flooded home.

Don't Touch the Water

Flood water can be contaminated with sewage and debris, so you should avoid contact with it whenever possible. It is especially crucial not to get it on your hands or face. If you need to get something done in a flooded area, it may be safer to hire water damage restoration specialists to handle it so you can avoid any accidents. Personal protective equipment can reduce your risk, such as:

  • tall, rubber boots
  • rain pants or waders
  • waterproof gloves

Don't Jump the Gun

Try not to shell out any cash until you're sure of your situation and know all of your options. There are federal and state emergency funds that can help with temporary housing or water damage repairs. It is also possible to apply for a grant from FEMA if your home sits within a declared disaster area. Don't buy any replacement furniture or appliances until all your repairs are finished, just in case things don't go as planned.

It can be tough to think about your home and belongings getting ravaged by flood water, but you need to prioritize health and safety when a storm hits. Taking your time and thinking things through can save you a lot of headaches later. Doing less may actually save you more!

Tips When Handling Storm Water

5/24/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Balch Springs storm damage We can handle any size disaster

When it comes to dealing with flood water in Balch Springs it's important to know that this type of water often falls into the black category. This can become a factor in many cleanup operations. It is important to understand where the water comes from and what to do if flooding occurs in your business.

Where Black Water Comes From

Contaminated water, otherwise known as black water, is any water that may have come in contact with fecal matter. This may include

  • Sewer water
  • Water from fields
  • Toilet backup
  • River run off

Flooding falls into the black category because often there is no way to tell what it has come into contact with. In most cases, it is best to assume it has been contaminated and follow the proper sanitation procedures.

What To Do If Flooding Occurs

If you're busy with storm damage or flood water, it’s important to conduct any repairs necessary as quickly as possible. Doing so can help prevent further damage and may also help when it comes time to talk to your insurance. Since flooding is considered to be contaminated water, it's important to remember to sanitize the damaged area as well as to clean the zone.

How Your Insurance May Help

Depending on your policy your commercial insurance may cover the costs of cleanup and repairs related to flooding. They may even recommend a flood restoration service who can help with every step of the process. If you have questions about what exactly is covered by your policy, it's important to talk to your insurance agent.

Understanding that flood water falls into the black category can help you take proper sanitation measures when it comes time to clean up. Most experts recommend thoroughly drying the area, and then following recommended sanitation practices. In many cases, your insurance may cover the cost of restoration. If you have any questions, a professional may be able to help.

Water Damage Spots Can Occur at Any Time Your Trusted Balch Springs Water Damage Removal Team is Here For Any Size Disaster.

There Are a Few Key Areas You Should Check for Damage in Your Balch Springs Home

Locating water damage and its sources is the first step in restoring your Balch Springs. Preferably, it would help if you had your home periodically inspected by professionals for water-related issues. However, there are some key places you can check on your own if you suspect a water problem.

When inspecting water damage spots in your Balch Springs home, SERVPRO technicians repeatedly find it in the same areas. They generally discover it near windows, in ceilings under leaky roofs, by pipe networks, around appliances, or beside water containers.

With all this in mind, some specific places you should check for water problems and associated damage are:

  • The caulking around your window frames, your windows’ glass seals, and the areas beside and under your windows
  • Attics, other spots directly under roofs, and places behind ceiling leaks or discolored structural elements
  • Under sinks and around known pipe networks, especially after hard freezes, where leaky or burst pipes may occur
  • or under washing machines, around the valves and gaskets of dishwashers, and near water heater tanks that haven’t been serviced in a while
  • Around old or corroded water containers that may have been neglected for some time

Should you locate a water leak and related damage, you will likely need professional water damage remediation to help you with water cleanup and water damage repairs.

With that said, it is comforting to know that the highly trained and well-equipped water damage experts at SERVPRO of Balch Springs are just a phone call away. Contact us at (469)-998-6445 for assistance whenever you need us.

Fire Damage Can Completely Ruin A Home We are your Balch Springs trusted fire damage repair team.

SERVPRO of Balch Springs Offers Prompt Fire Damage Restoration Services in Dallas

A fire can start in your home due to unattended space heaters, boilers, stoves, and electrical faults. SERVPRO's fire restorers can assess the destruction, including flame, smoke, soot, and water damage, and decide how to fix things. The intensity of the destruction usually depends on the severity and size of the fire. We examine a property to determine how far the flames, soot, water, and smoke penetrated the property.

Our SERVPRO restorers also examine the property's contents like furniture, carpets, and removable fixtures to determine what is salvageable. We can then provide complete fire or smoke damage clean up to get it back to livable, safe conditions. Cleaning up after a fire involves removing debris, smoke residues, and resolving water damage. It also involves removing and eradicating ruined contents and eliminating odors.

The damage from the flames is what most people notice, but smoke can also cause destruction. Different kinds of smoke exist, including dry, wet, and fuel oil smoke. Wet smoke is the most challenging to remove. It covers surfaces in a thick coating and has a strong odor. Wet smoke comes from fires that burn at lower temperatures. On the other hand, dry smoke comes from fires that burn at higher temperatures and is easier to clean. It is not likely to find fuel oil smoke in a home unless an oil-burning furnace causes it.

Smoke can cause significant destruction due to the corrosive effects and odor. It can begin the corrosion process a few minutes after falling on surfaces. It is a priority to clean it; otherwise, you may have to replace the affected surfaces. SERVPRO's emergency cleaning services may include:

  • Immediate cleaning of the rooms you need to use.
  • Deodorization of strong odors.
  • Containment, if only a part of the structure is damaged.
  • Water removal.

Some smoke residues are corrosive to surfaces. We can wipe residues from plastic surfaces, fiberglass surfaces, light-colored painted surfaces, and Formica countertops. Our SERVPRO team can also clean and protect metal surfaces that contain iron and chrome trim like door hardware, faucets, window frames, and lamps. Pre-cleaning the surfaces and coating them with lubricant can reduce further corrosion and protect them.

Prompt Commercial Water Damage Restoration Helps Returning To Normal Business Hours

Removing water fast helps reduce the primary and secondary destruction that can occur. Through SERVPRO's water restoration process, you can return to business within a short time to avoid losing revenue.

SERVPRO uses advanced equipment, tools, and approved products for an efficient and fast mitigation process. We remove any extra damage that has already saturated the building materials during the drying process through evaporation and dehumidification. Our restorers can use two 20-inch reinforced duct lines with desiccant dehumidifiers to dry your property.

Dehumidifiers absorb moisture using chemicals called desiccants. The heat is transferred through one of the duct lines to the affected area through the desiccant. Following the heating of the affected area, another duct line removes moisture from the affected building. Our SERVPRO team prefers using desiccant dehumidifiers because:

  • The equipment produces the driest air with the least vapor.
  • It is advantageous for complicated assemblies comprised of different materials and voids.
  • It works well for dense and semi-porous materials such as concrete, large timbers, and hardwood flooring.

We also consider desiccant dehumidifiers ideal for large loss areas or commercial settings because they can create a substantial vapor pressure differential and quickly dry the property.

Be Cautious Around The "Clean" Source if Water Damage Occurs

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage in Home A few do's and don'ts when it comes to dealing with water damage from a "clean" source.

Tips for when you have water flooding from a "clean source"?

Do:

  • Stop the water source if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building, as long as the access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.
  • Remove as much excess water as possibly by mopping and blotting.
  • Absorb excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and lift up wet upholstery cushions to begin the drying process.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood block between furniture legs and wet carpeting. This helps with colors bleeding on carpet or other surfaces.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture to a safe, dry area.
  • Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirting and window coverings off damp floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

What should you NOT do when a water damage occurs?

Don't:

  • Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards.
  • Leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors to cause staining.
  • Leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, possible causing electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Why Are Fire Odors So Bad When The Physical Damage Looks To Be Minor?

A common issue with fire damage restoration in Balch Springs homes is odor control. SERVPRO response teams know that even a small amount of smoke can leave pungent, and difficult to remove, odors in the furniture, clothing, and even structure of each home.

Where Do Response Teams Begin?

We begin restoration efforts by removing the residues left behind by the smoke and material burned in your Balch Springs. Our tools include the following:

  • Brushes – For dry, powdery residues, technicians use soft-bristled brushes to wipe them off surfaces. They use stiff-bristled brushes to break up wet, thicker residues. The stiff-bristled brushes are especially useful on brick, concrete, and stone surfaces.
  • Vacuums – Paired with a special filter, they can trap the smallest bit of residue for removal from the home. Technicians use them on carpets and hard surfaces like tabletops.
  • Cleaners – Technicians use cleaners to help soften, and loosen residue layers for easier removal. Our inventory includes agents designed for every surface from recliners to fireplaces.

Does This Remove All of The Odors?

Not all, but it does eliminate the source of most of them. For very strong odors trapped in surfaces, SERVPRO technicians may use a more pleasant, covering smell to mask the odor until it fades. Where the odor deeply penetrated structural material like drywall or wood framing, it may be necessary to replace them. For curtains and upholstered furniture, we also have access to an extensive number of chemical agents designed to lift odor-causing particles out of those surfaces.

How Can I Restore My Balch Springs Home After A Flood Damage

Hire SERVPRO Restoration Teams to Clean and Restore Your Balch Springs Home

Every Balch Springs home suffers after a disaster of any kind. Flooding, though, continues to cause problems until all of the water and the soaked, damaged property is removed from the home.

All SERVPRO has to do is Pump Out the Water, Right?

No, stopping Balch Springs flood damage only starts with water removal. SERVPRO technicians use the latest equipment available to rapidly pump out flooding from your home, but that won’t eliminate every threat. Our team members also draw water out of personal and structural property like sofas and wall panels, dispose of items too damaged for restoration, and spray every affected surface with an antibacterial agent to reduce threats and stop mold growth.

How Do You Get Water Out of Walls?

For paneling, technicians use the following devices to remove trapped moisture:

  • Air Movers that generate a warm airflow which carefully pushes moisture out into the air without cracking or splitting drywall and other panels.
  • Fans to draw the cool, moisture-filled air away from affected rooms, which speeds up the natural evaporation rate.
  • Dehumidifiers to pull water out of the air, which increases the efficiency of the other devices.

Our restoration teams also use these devices to dry out sofas and other furniture. Team members place each piece on blocks or pallets and use the fans to increase air circulation all around them.

Why Is Flood Water a Risk?

Water that flows in from outside carries soil and other contaminants. SERVPRO technicians spray every surface affected by the flood to neutralize bacteria. This action, along with removing the water, also helps to reduce the possibility of mold growing inside your home, causing another disaster as we eliminate the first one.

Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration

In the event of fire damage in Balch Springs, problems can arise not only from the fire itself but also from smoke, soot, debris, destroyed objects, and water damage from firefighting efforts. Ultimately, fire damage repair can be a long and challenging process and potentially compromised structural integrity. Because of this, Balch Springs fire damage restoration is typically best left to local professionals and carefully aligned with insurance policies.

Fire Damage Restoration

Fire Damage to your Balch Springs home, residence itself can be the most challenging hurdle in many cases. Burned objects, wood, furniture, flooring, or anything else can be challenging to remove without specialized tools. Additionally, it can be tough to tell which objects can be salvaged and which are damaged beyond repair, thanks to commonly heavy amounts of soot and ash. Depending on the intensity of the fire, this may require an entire team of people to clean up.

Smoke Damage Restoration

In addition to darkening and staining even the hardest to reach corners, smoke can also leave a pervasive smell long after the house is visually clean. This is due to tiny and microscopic particles of smoke, which often work their way into the walls and floors of the house itself. Cleaning up smoke in a Balch Springs home typically requires special equipment and a lengthy cleaning time.

Water Damage Restoration

Water damage often surprises homeowners as being an even more significant problem than the fire damage itself. Whether through firefighters' hoses or burst pipes, heavy water damage is relatively common among fire-damaged Balch Springs homes. Depending on the scale and intensity of the water damage, this may require extensive reconstruction efforts.

If your Balch Springs home has experienced fire and smoke damage of any kind, do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Balch Springs.

Commercial Property Insurance

In the event that your Balch Springs building experiences a fire, you'll want to have the right commercial property insurance. This is essential for financing parts of the fire damage restoration process. If you're unfamiliar with this type of insurance, here are three things to know as a business owner.

1. What Can Be Covered
One of the most important parts of getting commercial property insurance is determining what it will cover in the event of a fire. Essentially, this type of insurance covers the building itself, the assets inside and the assets that are just outside. These are some things that can be covered:

  • Computers
  • Equipment
  • Documents
  • Landscaping
  • Inventory

After thinking over what you have, consider how much your business’ assets are likely worth and choose the amount of coverage that covers these costs. Also, consider any deductibles that would need to be paid before your coverage kicks in.

2. What Steps To Take
If you're looking to get this type of commercial insurance, there are some key steps you should take. First, thoroughly inspect your property. Take stock of every physical asset you encounter.
Next, meet with an insurance agent to get a better sense of how your coverage would work. If you can afford the agreed-upon coverage, it would likely be wise to invest in it.

3. What the Cost Is
The cost of your commercial insurance can't be immediately determined. Insurance agents need to analyze the replacement value of your inventory. Your agency will also take several other factors into consideration. Essentially, the cost will be lower if your building is less likely to experience a fire. This can involve your building's materials, the city's fire protection, the fire preparation in your building and the building's tenants.
In the event that your building experiences a fire, you'll want to be prepared with commercial insurance. Assess your property and consider taking steps to protect it.

Four Classifications of Water Damage

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Balch Springs Water Damage

While there are three basic categories of water (clean, grey, black), there are also four classifications of water damages.   The IICRC’s S-500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration separates water damage into four distinct classes. Each class is based on the severity of the water damage, and they determine what steps must be followed in the mitigation and restoration process.

THE 4 PRIMARY CLASSIFICATIONS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects only part of a room or area; a little amount of carpet or carpet pads may or may not be wet.  Also, larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.
  • Class 2 involves a significant amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. An entire room of carpet and cushion pad is affected. Water has risen up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves the largest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation.  This water loss has saturated an entire area.   Water may have come from overhead which may impact ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushions, and subfloor.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations. Wet materials with low permeance or porosity such as hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete. Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

SERVPRO of East Dallas has the knowledge, experience, and proper equipment to locate any hidden moisture lurking out of sight and clean up water damage of any size and get it done right the first time.  If you or anyone you know experiences water damages, give our team a call.

Fire Extinguisher: Remember PASS

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Balch Springs Fire Damage Repair

Fire extinguishers can be used to help control small fires during emergency situations when used correctly.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests remembering the word PASS while using the device.

  • Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

There are different classes of fire and each fire extinguisher has labels designated for the type of fire to use the extinguisher on. Become familiar with the device before a fire breaks and double check the fire extinguisher label to make sure it’s designed to fight the type of fire.

Fire Damage & Soot Facts

SERVPRO Balch Springs fire damage Kitchen fire in Balch Springs

Smoke and soot facts:

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure penetrating various cavities in your home, causing hidden damage and odor.  Smoke typically flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

Did you know there are Different Types of Smoke?

  • Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber
    • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood
    • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
    • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Dallas will test the soot with our advanced technology to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.  Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
